Behavior-Based Donor Relations
Let’s face it - the way we’ve always done it is fading into the background as new efforts emerge. But some shops are still stuck in traditional thanking methods based on gift amount to define their communication and recognition efforts. We have finite resources, both in staff and budgets, and we must strategize ways to satiate many donors with different interests and needs. By developing a program based on donor behaviors, in lieu of arbitrary giving amounts, we can ensure we are communicating gratitude and impact to donors at all levels of giving.
Breakout Sessions (75 Min)
9:45-11:00 am

Why Can’t You Just Say Thank You
It’s pretty solidly proven that increasing gratitude towards donors will, in turn, increase retention rates and donor satisfaction . . . and increase your fundraising results! Do you find it hard to say thank you? Tough to get the letter out of the door? There’s actually a reason for that and it’s rooted in our biochemistry. But there’s also a neuro-scientific reason why expressing gratitude will increase philanthropic giving. Let’s dig into this knowledge and research and then use that to every fundraiser’s advantage in creating a donor gratitude stream that will have a huge impact on your fundraising results.
Speaker: T. Clay Buck, MFA, CFRE, Founder, TCB Fundraising
To Be, or Not to Be? Serving as a Leader with Grants
Grants provide not only funding for change but also leadership development opportunities. Grant professionals often play a pivotal role in the overall grant process. This session examines how grant professionals serve as a leader in different settings. Ken uses a leadership action cycle model (Van Wart, 2008) as a self-assessment tool. By discussing the model with real-life examples, the presenter argues that grant professionals should go above and beyond their traditional roles, make an impact to their communities, and achieve their personal/professional goals. The session includes a slide presentation, a self-assessment exercise, and group discussion.
Speaker: Kenichi (Ken) Maruyama, PhD, MPA, GPC, Strategic Initiatives Manager at Navajo County

Are There Holes in Your Bucket?
Are you struggling to meet your fundraising, marketing, or other goals? Maybe you feel like you’re stuck, with no time or bandwidth to take your work to the next level. Or, maybe you think things are going great – but in reality, if you’re like most organizations, you’re probably working at about 60% efficiency. That’s a lot of wasted resources!
No matter what size your team or program, or how well you think things are going, you can find ways to improve, work more efficiently, and produce better results. In fact, the smaller your operation, the less you can afford to waste your time and energy on processes that don’t work well!
Learn a few simple tools you can use to take an intentional look at how you’re doing things, identify and start to fix breakdowns in communication and process, make sure everyone is on the same page, and cut out extra work that isn’t helping you achieve your goals. In other words, you can start to find and repair the holes that prevent you from successfully carrying water for your organization.

Balancing Act- Recognizing Donors through a DEI Lens
Donors want to feel special. We want to recognize them. What happens when recognizing the elite among our donors is in direct contradiction to our commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion? How can we say we’re committed to inclusivity when we have giving societies that are based solely on a donor’s capacity to give large amounts of money? What do giving and recognition societies look like in light of our commitment to DEI as an organization? Join us for the rethinking of donor recognition. How do we balance the need to recognize our donors while understanding innately that the way we currently do this alienates others? In this session we’ll take a hard look at ourselves and our donors and find out what to do in these situations.

Focus On What Matters: A Data-Inspired Look At Setting Fundraising Priorities
Let’s face it, data isn’t for everybody but we are fundraising in a time where we have more data about our work than ever before. We have more information at our fingertips that can help us strategize and focus. In this fun – promise! Data can be fun! – and engaging session we look at using the data we already have to help identify where our focus needs to be and how best to use it in setting fundraising priorities.

"Michael Scott” Won’t Do: Leadership for Fundraising Success
Who are your fundraising leaders? And why does it matter, anyway? “Our fundraising team is a bunch of rock stars!” The Great Reshuffle has made space and given voice to calls for transformation in workplace culture, work-life balance, and the leveling of playing fields. But how can these calls truly transform the (often toxic) culture of fundraising while meeting fundraising goals? And where do we begin? Join me for a presentation and candid conversation as we discuss and brainstorm ways to ditch what I call the "Messiah Complex" in fundraising and move toward a more fair, equitable, and humane professional experience for everyone.
